For thirty years, the Societe Generale Art Collection has served as a reflection of both cultural heritage and modern creativity. Established in 1995, it now comprises nearly 1,800 works by French and international artists, embodying the bank’s commitment to artistic innovation and inclusivity.
To mark this milestone, a special series of artist portraits has been created. This edition highlights Julien des Monstiers, a painter whose work bridges classical influences and contemporary experimentation.
Born in 1983, Julien des Monstiers graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Recognized with several awards, he has become a notable figure in today’s art scene thanks to his exploration of painting’s boundaries—where fine arts meet applied arts.
Des Monstiers is renowned for his distinctive transfer technique, where patterns painted on a large studio table are reinterpreted on the canvas. This method enables him to traverse themes ranging from craftsmanship traditions to abstract aesthetics.
He describes his practice as “a filter through which he perceives the world, transforming the everyday into rich and evocative visual narratives.”
Acquired in 2016, Brand New Old is exhibited at Societe Generale’s Paris headquarters at 29 Haussmann. The artwork demonstrates how des Monstiers merges classical artistic languages with a modern sensibility, creating pieces that both honor and reinterpret tradition.
Julien des Monstiers redefines painting through innovation rooted in tradition, reflecting Societe Generale’s ongoing dedication to creativity and cultural dialogue.
