Romanian Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu resigned on Friday after acknowledging he had provided false information about his academic background in his official resume.
According to his statement, Mosteanu admitted that he had listed studies he never completed.
“I take full responsibility for this mistake. It was an error I made years ago and now I must face the consequences,” he said.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu accepted the resignation, emphasizing the need for integrity in public office. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that Mosteanu will remain in his position only until a successor is appointed to ensure a smooth transition.
Public reaction in Romania was divided. Some called for stricter vetting of public officials, while others commended the minister for admitting the lie and stepping down voluntarily.
The resignation marks another shake-up in the Romanian government, which has faced a series of high-profile scandals over the past year. Political analysts suggest that this incident could further erode public trust ahead of the upcoming elections.
“Transparency and honesty must define government leadership,” said constitutional law expert Andrei Popa.
Mosteanu, who took office in early 2024, previously served in the Romanian Armed Forces and later as a member of parliament. His departure leaves a key post vacant during ongoing security cooperation talks with NATO allies.
“Romania will continue its defence commitments without interruption,” a government spokesperson confirmed.
