Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown was arrested and brought back to the United States from Dubai to face an attempted murder charge related to a shooting in Miami, police confirmed Thursday.
According to Miami police spokesperson Mike Vega, Brown, 37, was detained by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is currently held while awaiting extradition to Miami. Authorities have not stated why New Jersey was the initial destination or how long Brown had been staying in Dubai, though his social media activity indicated several months of residence there.
The arrest warrant describing the events of May 16 alleges that Brown seized a handgun from a security staff member following a celebrity boxing event in Miami. He then allegedly fired two shots at a man he had fought with earlier that evening.
"One of the bullets grazed my neck," said the victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, during his statement to investigators.
On social media, Brown stated:
"Handed over the keys to the socials and CTESPN to my team while I go through this fight for my innocence. Happy to showcase love & entertainment. All love & respect to everyone for the support. #FREEAB"It remains unclear whether Brown has legal representation or when he will be transferred to Miami to face formal proceedings.
Antonio Brown’s arrest ties to a Miami shooting incident after a boxing event, leaving him facing serious legal challenges and awaiting extradition from New Jersey.
