Police in Stockport are investigating an incident in Marple after a fire was deliberately started near the local war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday.
Emergency services were alerted around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 November, following reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph. A bin and several wooden pallets were set on fire, causing damage to the surrounding ground.
“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated,”
— Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon
The incident has sparked anger among residents and on local social media groups, with councillors expressing concern over the disrespect shown so close to the memorial and Remembrance Sunday events.
“This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived within minutes, and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. We are working closely with partners at Stockport Council and the fire service to ensure the area is cleaned and restored.”
— Police Sergeant Rachel Walton, Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as the inquiry continues.
